Nico Zwirs wins the 51st Dortmund International Chess Days

Surprise in the A-Open of the Sparkassen Chess Trophy 2024: IM Nico Zwirs wins the tournament after beating GM Yoo in the final round!

Pähtz Wagner 180824On the first board, GM Frederik Svane made no attempt to win and quickly agreed a draw with GM Anton Korobov. The third player in the leading trio was Zwirs on the second board. His opening didn't go so well, so his opponent GM Christopher Wojin Yoo wanted to win the game in order to jump onto the winner's podium himself. But as the game progressed, Yoo lost the thread and Zwirs played the resulting rook endgame brilliantly, winning the game and the tournament ahead of the participating grandmasters!

In the women's match for the German number 1, the last game ended in a draw, so that the overall match ended 3-3. Dinara Wagner and Elisabeth Pähtz were on an equal footing at a high level and each defended poor positions strongly in the match. The German number 1 in women's chess therefore remains undecided for the time being.
