Lu minMiaoyi Lu (photo from the recently played Chinese Championship) started chess at an early age through her mother, also a women´s grandmaster, and was inspired by Chinese chess legend Yifan Hou. Her impressive rise in youth chess has been evidenced by numerous successes and titles. At the age of 10, she participated in the 2020 Belgrade Women's Grand Masters Invitational and won the championship. . Miaoyi has quickly established herself as one of China's most promising young chess players and is now being recognised at international level. André Schulz (Chessbase) already wrote in 2020: "Will Miaoyi Lu be the new Yifan Hou?"

She currently is FIDE rated at 2438. She was awarded the title of Women's Grandmaster in 2023, and will soon also receive the title of International Master. The path to 2500 and the grandmaster title seems to be just a matter of time, and the chess world would not be surprised if she plays for the women's world championship crown in a few years' time.

Her debut at the Sparkassen Chess Trophy 2024 will be an exciting opportunity for Miaoyi to compete with numerous renowned title holders in the A-Open. The Dortmund International Chess Days are proud to welcome Miaoyi Lu to their line-up this year and are eager to see how this exceptional young chess champion performs. She will be travelling with her mother, with whom IPS press office Patrick Zelbel spoke:

Why are you travelling to Dortmund this summer and what are you looking forward to?

We are mainly travelling to Dortmund to be able to compete and play against high-level players. The International Dortmund Chess Days have a long history and we have been watching the event for a long time. We are therefore delighted to have the opportunity to take part this year.

After last year's successfull time, what are the goals for 2024?

Lu Miaoyi's goal for this year is to achieve a rating of around 2450 and stabilise at this level.

Is this your first trip to Germany?

This will be our second time going to Germany. We went to Bad Zwischenahn in January to participate in NordWest Cup Open. Afterwards, we visited Hamburg for 2 days and had wonderful memories.

Registration for the Open of the 51st International Dortmund Chess Days is open. The capacity is limited to 200 participants per Open, so early registration ensures a starting place!
