An eventful third day of the tournament ended in Dortmund with a second draw between the two best German chess players. National player Frederik Svane has shown good form so far at the Sparkassen Chess Trophy.
The second matchgame was opened for Elisabeth Pähtz by Christian Oecking, President of Haus und Grund and Chairman of the Huckarde Trade Association. Afterwards, Dinara Wagner was surprised by her opponent's choice of opening.
Visually, Pähtz achieved a small advantage by securing the bishop pair. But Wagner then let her have her way when the white queen tried to penetrate on h7 and was able to take control of the centre. In fact, Pähtz assessed the position correctly and was content with a repetition of moves and a draw in the middlegame rather than taking risks.
Dinara Wagner then gave an insight at the interview wall with Patrick Zelbel.
In the Alte Schmiede, Artur Yusupov led through the top games with whimsical explanations. He will be a guest all week and will commentate on all rounds for spectators from Wednesday.
In the A-Open, Artur saw two favourites win on stage: Frederik Svane was able to make better use of his bishop pair against GM Thanh Trang Hoang and outplay his opponent nicely. Top seed Anton Korobov also won seemingly effortlessly today by winning his opponent IM Nicola Altini's isolated pawn early on. The Italian FM Fulvio Zamengo will be annoyed: he unnecessarily lost a rook ending against GM Christopher Yoo (2616), who had struggled in the games so far, but won them all with a great fight.
There were notable successes for the outsiders at the following boards: super talent Christian Glöckler drew from a position of strength against GM Evgeny Romanov and Michael Green drew with Black against IM Gerlef Meins. Green has played an outstanding tournament so far, so he was awarded the prize for the best game of the second round (photo).
In the B-Open there were many decisive games at the top boards in the morning on the hottest day of the year. This leaves 13 players with 3 points from 3 games. The action continues on Wednesday. On Tuesday, a rapid chess tournament at the Dortmund Chess Club is on the programme. Registration starts in the Ardeyschoppen at 5 pm, the rapid chess tournament at 6 pm. Cold drinks will be provided and Elisabeth Pähtz and Dinara Wagner will be on site.
