Chief arbiter Frank Jäger announced the first round of the B-Open of the Sparkassen Chess Trophy punctually at 10.30 am. With 191 players, the tournament started virtually full.
The top seed Bernhard Zoremba (photo) from Dortmund club SV Eichlinghofen played on the first board. In a wild game, his opponent Claudio Bruno had a good chance of starting with a surprise. He could have tactically turned the game around in the middlegame. But after he failed to capitalise on these opportunities, Zoremba confidently exploited his extra pawn.
The first surprise came from Helge Prause on board 6, who outplayed his opponent, who was rated 250 TWZ points higher.
The first 20 boards of the two open tournaments will be broadcast live this year so that the games can also be replayed afterwards.
All in all, a very successful start to the Sparkassen Chess Trophy, the good weather invites you to linger after the game and perhaps look over the shoulders of the participants in the A-Open from 3 pm!
