Indian grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly will once again be competing in the Sparkassen Chess Trophy 2026. After finishing second behind GM Matthias Blübaum last year, the experienced top player is returning to the prestigious tournament, enriching the field of participants with his vast international experience.
Ganguly is not only a familiar face in his home country, but has also been well known in Germany and Europe for many years. As former second to world champion Viswanathan Anand and six-time Indian national champion, he is one of India's most important chess players. Ganguly has been playing for SG Solingen in the German Bundesliga since 2017. Last year, Ganguly stood out not only for his games, but also for his engaging analyses and interviews in Dortmund, making him one of the crowd favourites alongside the German grandmasters.
His return to the A Open underlines the international significance of the Dortmund Chess Days and the organisers' promise to put together a high-calibre field of participants. Both open tournaments are limited to a maximum of 200 players. Registration is already open!
