With an impressive score of 7.5 points from 8 games, Ihor Nahornyi clearly won the B Open at the International Dortmund Chess Days.
The 18-year-old Ukrainian thus achieved a tournament performance (Elo rating) of over 2300. In the eighth game, a quick draw against Phuc Nhat Nguyen was enough to seal his tournament victory.
Second place also went to an U18 player: Tim Geist crowned his strong tournament with a victory in the final round, securing the silver medal. He was only defeated by tournament winner Nahornyi. Third place went to Julian Dödens, who secured a place on the podium by a narrow margin in the final round with a draw.
The best woman in the field was Ronja Jacobasch, who finished just ahead of Viktoria Kühn thanks to a better Buchholz score after winning in the final round.
Third place in the women's competition went to the reigning German U12 champion Daria Shynkar, who played a great tournament and forced a draw against last year's winner Oleksandr Kasapchuk in the final round.
The game of the day made for a special headline: Florian Weidert (photo) defeated last year's winner Oleksandr Kasapchuk with a remarkable rook sacrifice on b2. For this success, he also receives a three-month membership with ChessMood, the partner for the game of the day.
The top three players in the B Open are eligible to participate in the A Open of the Sparkassen Chess Trophy 2026 next year, regardless of their rating.
